Captain Moori looked up from the long-range scanners. “There she is, but we’ll never reach her before she jumps out. The Battleking has cleared the second nav buoy and is almost clear of the asteroids.”

“Let’s make certain, Captain.” Spokes wanted a positive ID on the Destroyer so he’d know if they were going to be facing off with more than one. “I don’t want any surprises later.”

“Its shields are down, Sir. Just like when she jumped.” Captain Moori stated aloud, but to no one in particular. “Tell he fighters to use the nav buoys to plot a micro-jump. Otherwise, they’ll never get close enough.”

“Aye, Sir.” The Comm Officer gave the pilots the order and the two X-Wings peeled off towards the nearer buoy.

Admiral Borran raised an eyebrow as he looked first at his SO, who just shrugged, and then turned his gaze to Captain Moori.

“You have a better idea, Admiral?”

“No. I just hope those two line it up or they’ll become one with the asteroid field.”

“They’ll do fine.” His voice sounded confident, but his eyes never left the scanner.

Captain Adolain smiled as the big Mon Cal Cruiser entered the system on the far side of the asteroid field. “Finally.” He handed his cup of caf to his aide and began his stroll down the elevated walkway that gave him a full view of everything that went on aboard his ship. “How long ‘til we make the jump, Lieutenant.”

“Just a few minutes, Sir. It will take time to get moving from a full stop.”

“Very well.” Adolain had known the Republic would take the bait and that he now had to keep them here just long enough so that the asteroid field would prevent them from making a quick jump out of the system. “A few minutes will suffice, but hold the jump until I give the order.”

“Aye, Sir.”
“Two fighters just emerged 4.7 klicks aft, Sir.” The Tactical Officer called out.

“Excellent.” Captain Adolain’s accurate assessment of the necessary steps that his pursuers had to take pleased him and he knew it would impress his crew. He had noticed some doubtful looks when he had ordered them to make the run through the asteroid field without shields, but he had been forced to retreat through here during the battles over the Outer Rim Territories. He knew this area of space all to well. “As soon as they get a positive ID on the Battleking, make the jump.”

“Aye, Sir.”

“Call in the blockade runners now.” Captain Adolain’s smile turned a bit sour at the thought that he would not get to see the death roll of the big cruiser, but that was a small price to pay.

“It’s the Battleking.”

“Captain, we’ve got company, but it doesn’t look like much.”

Spokes rolled up to the tactical display and saw the lone Corvette and then it launched a wave of Dupes. “Not much … wait for it…”

“I really don’t like this.” Gav said over the Admiral’s shoulder. “This is no coincidence. They jump in just as soon as our fighter support is to far out to provide any cover. Captain, launch the fighters on standby.”

“Another Corvette, Sir.”

“How long until we can jump out of here.” Captain Moori asked.

“Too long, Sir. We’ll have to pull out of the asteroid field…”

“Nicely played.” Spokes said as the Battleking disappeared from the scanners. Another Corvette appeared and asteroids and blockade runners effectively blocked the Windstorm from making a quick escape. “Nicely played indeed.”

The battle raged all around the Windstorm and the ships gunners were scoring as many kills as the snubfighters, but attrition favored the Imps.

“Shields at 40%, Sir.” Captain Moori had standing orders to call out the Windstorm’s status during battle. It saved time, but it had an unnerving effect on those who had not seen a Cap Ship in battle, especially not this one.

“Incoming transmission, Sir.” The Comm Officer looked puzzled briefly. “Admiral, it’s for you and it’s Code Red 4A.”

This time, Gav raised an eyebrow. “Red 4A? We are already engaged…”

“Aye.” Spokes frowned at the Comm Officer. “Transfer it to my datapad.” The pad beeped when the transfer was complete and Spokes read the message and his frown deepened and he handed the datapad to Gav.

“By the Emperor’s black bones…” Gav’s jawed dropped after that. “Son of a…”

“Hold that thought.” Spokes cut him off before he had a chance to get up a head of steam. “Captain Moori, have my shuttle prepped for launch. I’m leaving immediately.”

“Sir? We can’t break off to provide a shuttle with cover…”

“Shields at 30%, Sir.”

“…our fighters are engaged.”

“Aye. I noticed. The “Teke’s Hand” is in the aft hangar. Wake up that kid from Green … what’s his name, Angel? He can fly cover until I make the jump out of the asteroid field.”

“Mind if I ask what’s so important that you need to leave in the middle of this mess?” Captain Moori was quite clearly unamused.

“Ah, my apologies Captain,” Spokes said with no humor in his voice but the ever-present twinkle in his eyes that made the Captain wonder, again, whether the Admiral was crazy after all. “Seems HC found its sense of humor. They’ve named me the new FC.”

“What?” Captain Moori took the pad and read the message. “This is … well … congratulations, Sir.”

“Thank you, Captain.” Spokes wheeled about to so he’d be face to face with Gav. “I’m leaving you in charge of the Windstorm until Vykk can get over here. Get clear of this asteroid field and hold off on giving chase to the Battleking. Whoever is in Command of that ship is going to be tough prey.”

“I’m not sure which is harder to believe, that you’re leaving to lead the Fleet or that you’re leaving me here to face Vykk alone with what is surely going to be a damaged ship.”

“Shields at 20%, Sir.”

“You’ll do fine. Now, I’ve got to leave before we lose the shields completely. When this is done, check the bottom right drawer of my desk…”

“Sir, we’ve just received an incoming transmission from the Windstorm. It was sent to you personally sir, it’s marked Urgent.” Said Lieutenant Lysolin, the ships comm officer.

“Very well, transmit to my datapad.” Vykk told the lieutenant. Once the message was transmitted to him, Vykk read the message twice before swearing loudly enough to startle most of the bridge crew. Rapidly he punched in some new information to his datapad. “Lieutenant, I’ve just sent you a set of coordinates along with orders for the Echo Hawk to rendezvous with the Windstorm at that location, transmit it immediately. And someone call down to hangar one and tell them to get my X-wing prepped for flight.”

“What the hell’s going on, Vykk?” Stalker whispered to him.

“You’re in command of the task force now. I’m on my way over to the Windstorm to take command of the fleet.” Vykk told him.

“Did something bad happen to Spokes?” Stalker asked him in a worried voice.

“You might say that. Apparently the HC decided it would be funny to make him the new RS FC.” Vykk turned and began heading for the bridge exit. “Take care of my ship Stalks, and tell Han that he’s in charge of Gold now.

“What happened?” Gavin shouted over the noise of all the warning alarms that were blaring.

“One of the local stars just imploded without any kind of warning. The change in gravitational pull caused us to drop out of hyperspace.” Lt. Forstchen, the ships science officer told him.

“Oh, is that all? Recalc for the changes and get us back into hyperspace.”

“I’m afraid we can’t do that sir.” The ships damage control officer shouted at him from the otherside of the bridge.

“Why not?”

“Because when we dropped out of hyperspace our reactor had a power spike and it fried half a dozen systems on the ship. One of them was our hyperdrive.” Major Kang informed him.

Captain Moori quietly stepped up beside Gavin. “I’ve called the Warden and Keeper and informed them of our situation. They’re escorting a freighter to us that is carrying a spare hyperdrive for the ship. They should be here in a few hours. They’re also bringing a temporary replacement for our blown out shield emitters. It won’t allow us to engage in a pitched battle but it should give us a little extra protection should any Imps happen to come across our path. The specs for both the hyperdrive and the shield emitters are on here.” He handed Gavin a datapad.

“Ok. I’ll take a look at them.” Gavin muttered as he began to look at the information.

“A preliminary damage report is also on there.” The captain told him, lowering his voice so that no one else would be able to hear over the sirens. “I don’t think we’ll be able to get this ship battle ready again without putting into a shipyard.”

Gavin let out a long sigh. “Vykk is not going to be happy. In the mean time get some fighters out there just incase we have any uninvited visitors.”

“Already taken care of.”

Announcements

NEW PBF SO:

I would first just like to say thank you to those of you who applied for the position. We have made a decision. Congratulations to Colonel Sigurd Pillar on becoming the next PBF SO.

Sabre Squadron:
I’m sure that by now you’ve all noticed that Sabre squadron has been reactivated. For now this is just a trial to see how well things go. The fleet command staff will be monitoring the squadron closely for the next 3 missions and if everything goes well the reactivation will be made permanent.

Undernet:

#PBF is once again a registered channel on the Undernet (IRC). You can use xchat, mIRC, etc, to access the channel. There are usually a good number of members in the channel at any one time. Talk to the CS if you are having problems getting this to work. We can help.

PBF Forum Activity:

If you have not registered for the RS Forums, please do so right away. The PBF board is pretty active, and we will also be posting all of the narrative reports in a sticky thread each month. For those of you who enjoy reading what your fellow pilots write, you should check it out.
